Linn Groft

Linn Groft, most recently from Florence, AL, graduated summa cum laude with University Honors and as a Center for Ethics and Social Responsibility Scholar from the University of Alabama in Spring 2011 with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies: Global Studies in Community Health and Development and minors in Economics and Documentary Film & Justice. During her time at UA, Linn studied and volunteered in Ghana, Kenya, and Rwanda, worked as a Community Based Research Intern for the David Mathews Center for Civic Life, served as Communications Director of the Alabama International Relations Club, co-founded the Tuscaloosa Initiative for Language Education, and served as treasurer and then president of Apwonjo, a student organization committed to educating the UA community about issues of social justice in sub-Saharan Africa. Linn produced three short documentary films through the Center for Ethics & Social Responsibility’s Documenting Justice program, all of which have screened at national film festivals and one of which won Runner-Up for Best Creative Piece at DePauw University’s 2011 Undergraduate Ethics Symposium. Linn has also been accepted to present research and workshops on various topics at local and national student conferences and has been acknowledged with the Dorothy G. Baker Campus Leadership Award from the United Nations Association of the USA Greater Birmingham Chapter (2009), the William Thomas Barnes IV Memorial Scholarship for Excellence in Studies in Public Service (2010), the UA Volunteer of the Year Award (2010), and the Capstone Hero Award (2011). After her year of service with Impact Alabama, Linn hopes to find additional opportunities learning about the issues facing impoverished and otherwise disadvantaged communities before continuing on to graduate school.
